SG: Day 1 - Geylang, Orchard Road, City Hall and Marina Bay Sands

just about to land in this small but progressive country

Day 1 - August 24, 2014

Our flight is at 4AM so hubby and I went there early, anticipating the long queue in the immigration check-in. Fortunately, checking-in was a breeze.  We have a lot of time for breakfaast and window shopping.  I even slept for two hours before boarding.

waiting for boarding
I was awaken by bes J's call.  Unfortunately, she (the one who booked for us) was left behind due to less than a six month Passport validity period.  Haist!  almost 8 months ang preparation, passport pa ang di nasilip! Since it's a holiday on Monday, she was only able to process extension of her passport the next day.  With the help of her sister (for the plane ticket), it's a blessing that she was able to join us on our last day.

Immigration checking is "easy peasy", contrary to some stories I've heard.  The officer just looked at our passport and put stamp on it.

as a first timer, I'm so excited
We have checked-in at Fragrance Hotel Sapphire.  We just left our luggage then ate lunch after at the corner eatery with authentic Singaporean foods.  I love their fresh fruit juices and Hainanese Chicken Rice.  They did great in steaming the chicken.  There's no "lansa" taste.  The disadvantage of eating here though is you have to eat in haze as they are people waiting to be seated.

With the help of blog stalking and www.streetdirectory.com, I was able to learn on how to commute in SG.  I must say it's so convenient, efficient and practical commuting here.

Kallang Station

From Geylang, we ride a bus going to the nearest MRT station and went to Orchard Road to go to Lucky Plaza to buy promo tour packages in Cebu Air and Travel.  Inside Lucky Plaza, you will think that you are still in the Phils.  It's full of Filipinos.  Even the signs in the stores are in Filipino. Obviously, there are a lot of Filipino immigrants and workers here.

Cebu Air and Travel is highly recommendable.  First, the marketing people there are all Filipinos so you can talk to them clearly and easily.  Second, they really offer great discounts on tour packages. Third, they have great customer service.  They helped us a lot in choosing the best tour packages.  Fourth, they are honest in dealing with customers.  We have saved at least S$100 each (S$1=Php36) in availing their tour packages.

now ready for SG famous spots
Then we hoarded some super affordable chocolates at Choco Spot store.  They sell chocolates that are nearing expiration dates (6 months of less) at super bargain prices. If not for the inconvenience of carrying, it's really very tempting to hoard.

Since we have chocolates on hand, we opted to go back to the hotel first to check our room and freshen up.  We walked from MTR station to our hotel so we have the opportunity to look around the neighborhood.  Geylang district is so peaceful and quiet during daytime but so alive at night.

it's a day for the ghosts at that time so they are making offerings and burning them at the end of the day
I'm happy with our room.  It's clean, spacious enough, with H/C shower and best of all, a hair dryer.  With a price of P2,200/night, this is so worth it (booked through Agoda five months prior accommodation date).  Downside is that you can have an internet access for a fee (S$10 for 24 hours and S$5 for 2 hours).

Our other companions arrived in the afternoon then we went to Funan Digital Mall for some gadgets checking.  This is a haven for gadget lovers.  It's really tempting to buy one.  Some prices are cheaper compared to our local prices and with guarantee on the aunthenticity of the products being sold.  A was able to buy my dream mirrorless camera (Lumix).  I was really tempted to buy one for myself, too but I needed to control myself due to budget limitation.

the Shoppes at Marina Bay Sand

Our last stop for the day is Marina Bay Sands via MTR again.  We just enjoyed looking at the lights while munching on nuts and chips.  Going home, with barely energy left, we hailed a taxi in going back to the hotel.  It was indeed a very tiring day.
